Day 21+22, Los Angeles - i'm coming for you

Day 21: A Picture From My Day

So i'm cheating. This is actually from yesterday. Last night I ordered takeout from this tiny hole in the wall joint in Daly City. It's called Tani's Kitchen and they do up Japanese food home style. IT IS SO DAM GOOD. I got 2 orders of unagi don (1 for dad, 1 for my brother Dana) as well as 2 orders of the spicy hamburg steak (hamburger steak). The hamburger steak itself wasn't TOO spicy but it did had heat after awhile. It gave me heartburn :( But it was so dam good! I don't know how the heck they made a ground beef patty so tender.. Anywho, my mom didn't want anything. She made a giant pot of "jook" (rice porridge) and had some for dinner.
Once I got home with the food, I sat at my dad's computer desk to find myself face to face with this:
It's my mother's handwriting! I think she was drafting up an e-mail. Yes, my mother hand wrote a note before she typed it up as an e-mail. English is her 4th language so don't even try to clown on her grammar.
I love these notes she leaves around.
My father never leaves any in English, he barely reads/writes/speaks any. If anything, I will find Chinese characters written on random things i.e. napkins, wrappers, my homework (when i was younger) etc.
On Tuesday I came home to an empty house and thought my family abandoned me.
Thankfully, my mother had left me a note:
Yup, my mom calls me Sue.
She used to spell it out as SURE. It took her 10 years to learn that there is no R.
Yes my parents work out at the gym. they do from time to time (my mom actually works out every single morning at 6am..) but they went that night to swim in the pool and enjoy the heatwave. My brother was in another city (school) and my other brother had gone to the baseball game.

When I was younger I found these notes such a nuisance. Now, I cherish them. I realize that there will come a day when I won't see them anymore.

Day 22: What Makes Me Different
What makes me different from everyone else? Well.... there's only ONE of me for starters! HAHAHAHA. I'm a little bit of everything. I'm apprehensive but reckless. I'm outgoing but shy. I'm reserved but rambunctious. I'm a walking contradiction...and I guess you'll just have to find out why for yourself.

Day 20 - I wish I may, I Wish I Might..

As I mentioned previously, there's a heatwave going on in San Francisco. Today is the very last day of it and I am so sad to see it go. We've been experiencing the coldest summer in 40 years, but yesterday was the hottest day ever in San Francisco. My faux bro Leif & I hit up a free bbq / house party at Club Mighty yesterday. We each had a burger (Leif made his a double, fatty!) , grooved on some house music then left to get ice cream at Swensen's. I had never been to Swensens before even though a lot of people rave about it. Honestly y'all, nothing to rave home about. It's just a quaint little ice cream shop that is solid in the classic flavors.
.meet me at the ice cream truck.
mMmMmm coconut & rocky road!
Speaking of ice cream truck, i'm totally obsessed with this video. The jingle is too damn catchy and i'm not going to lie, I like watching buff men drop it low.
WARNING: NOT SAFE FOR WORK
This is why I keep saying "meet me at the ice cream truck"

So I wish I may, I wish I might....

  1. I wish the sun would come out to play more often in San Francisco. Our rendezvous was short and bittersweet. I will hopefully see you again this weekend when I fly to Los Angeles.
It is rare that I get to have the sunshine kissing my face "hello", so rare to feel that warmth hugging my skin.
forever chasing the sun

Day 16-19, HellOoOooo SUNSHINE!

A few things. First, it's scorching hot in San Francisco and I love it. It's official, we've hit triple digits. It's currently 101.9 degrees Farenheit (38.83 degrees Celcius for my international readers) in my beautiful little foggy city. Fog?? What fog!? However, it is fleeting seeing as how the heatwave will be over come Wednesday :[ poop!

I put my blog on hold. I've been chillaxing in the heat and saying goodbye to a dear friend who is moving back to New York. I knew summer was over for me once she had to go back to New York *sigh* Love you Ej, I always miss you.. You know that. We gathered together to have a "family" dinner at Jocelyn's house (Thomas, you were missing!) I made clams in white wine sauce while Ej made bruschetta.. Jocelyn made bbq chicken wings , pasta salad, and corn. Jocelyn's dad gave me some fruit cocktail with almond jello too. We don't mess around i'm telling you.
Yesterday I was at the Asian Market of all Asian markets (Ranch 99!) picking up some live clams when I spotted DRAON FRUIT IMPORTED FROM VIETNAM!!!! You guys have no idea how stoked I am to see this dam thing finally. I haven't eaten it since 2004 (when I was in Vietnam).
I would take each & every single last one home if I could
Dragon fruit isn't insanely sweet or anything like that. To be honest, its taste is very subtle. It has a faint hint of sweetness, and its flesh is more like a hybrid of a kiwi/watermelon. The seeds are edible and crunchy, almost like little black sesame seeds (without sesame flavor of course).
A lot of people say it doesn't have any flavor. I appreciate its subtle taste. Dragon fruit are actually pretty high in fiber, antioxidants, calcium, phosphorous, and vitamin C. They also help lower cholesterol and blood pressure. The seeds contain good fatty acids. *shrugs* All good news on that end! They're so tasty when they are super cold , eating them on hot humid days like today ... MmMmmm I can't wait to go buy more and eat them.
Sorry, it seems as though all my posts are about food huh? I'm going to go back to having "beauty" related posts once my 30 Day Challenge is over. I know it's getting kind of boring, sorry!

Day 16: Something I Could Live Without
My life has been pretty dam drama free since cutting key people out of my life. I love it that way and will do all I can to keep it that way. Seriously, if you're constantly stressing over bullshit.. You might want to re-think the people you're around or the way you're handling obstacles that come at you. Either the people around you are toxic and you need to re-organize that, or acquire better skills to handle life. It's an everlasting challenge and each day we learn more and more.

Day 17: Someone You Would Want To Switch Lives w/ For One Day & Why
Before any of you judge (stfu, I know somebody out there is! hahaha) think about it. She has millions upon millions just for being born (dammit). She comes and goes as she pleases (hahaha uhhmm..yeah). And although much of us could live without her ever having existed, I do admit she markets herself very well. (Minus the sex tape..because i'm sure we could all live without that too. By the way, i've never seen it nor do I care to watch it). I just think it'd be nice to wake up one morning and say "hm. today, I feel like some corn from Cafe Habana and shopping in SoHo. Let me just hop into my private jet..." or  "hm. I could really go for some macaroons and espresso. Off to Paris!"

Day 18: Plans/Dreams Goals You Have
find a job in Southern California
relocate myself in Southern California
keep on traveling the globe.

Day 19: Nicknames You Have & How or Why You Have Them
Susy is actually a nickname. I've been going by it for nearly 12 years. When I meet people, many have a hard time remembering my real name or they think it's something else (huh? JOANNA? -_- )
I just go by SUSY and the most confusion I ever get is the occasional "Oh, nice to meet you Judy!"
I acquired the name Susyness sometime ago when I was 17 or 18. I used to go clubbing a lot, then eventually was working in the clubbing industry. Someone decided to dub me "The Susyness." It stuck for awhile, but once I fell out of that scene, it disappeared. I decided to resurrect it for blogger & twitter however, one of my gorgeous friends (Amandababe!) decided to call me Susyness as well. Coincidence? Maybe.

Day 15: Ipod on Shuffle, 1st 10 Songs That Play

Oh man, this one might be embarassing.. Well, here goes nothing.
  1. Pump It - Black Eyed Peas
  2. Snap Yo Fingers - Lil Jon
  3. Airplanes, Part II ft Eminem & Hayley - B.o.B.
  4. Love Generation - Bob Sinclair
  5. Walking After You (acoustic) - Foo Fighters
  6. If You Still Love Me - Michael Wong
  7. 3Tempo3 - Punto (Mixed by Danny Tenaglia, Futurism album)
  8. Fuck Me I'm Famous - David Guetta *entire mix*
  9. Sometime - Miguel Migs
  10. Over - Drake (Hyper Crush Remix)
Funny that Hyper Crush actually came on because... I SAW THEM PERFORM IN SAN FRANCISCO LAST NIGHT!!! They are currently on tour with Far East Movement. Last night they performed at my favorite club in San Francisco, Ruby Skye.

dragged my faux bro Leif and my partner in crime Melissa
HYPER CRUSH
Holly Valentine
Donny Fontaine
Preston Moronie on Keytar. Yes, KEYTAR
FORGET COWBELL!
MOAR KEYTAR!!!

Oh and then Far East Movement came on and they were not that great live *shrugs*
Lots of yelling at autotune T-Pain app sounding crap *shrugs*

used Lucido Designing Aqua Hair Curl Lotion (Airy)
and curled my hair with my CHI flat iron
and then at the end of the night...
hair check! still pretty dam curly.
I'd recommend this product if you have trouble curling your hair. My hair cannot and does not hold a curl for the life of me. Recently, I learned how to curl my hair using a flat iron and that does MIRACLES for me.
However, I wanted to try using this Lucido stuff. It does work, holds the curl for pretty long, smells great, and it doesn't make your hair feel "crunchy" like hairspray does.
 outfit check? we're good.
bonne nuit!

Day 14: A Picture of Something I Ate + 10 Confessions

I'm meeting a friend for lunch at 1pm. However, at 12noon I was already starving. I am SO HUNGRY today! I keept eating everything in sight and freeloading off my coworkers "oh, can I have a bite?" hahahahah SO SO SO BAD. For breakfast today I had coffee and I ate a bag of chips. Then by the time 12:05pm hit, I started eating my sandwich that was leftover from dinner last night.
the menage a trois sandwich from Ike's Place
Halal Chicken Breast, Real Honey, Honey Mustard, BBQ, PepperJack, Swiss, Smoked Gouda
it's a very famous tiny tiny tiny hole in the wall sandwich shop in San Francisco. Ike's has fallen under a lot of controversy because 1. he's been operating without the proper permit (he has one to operate a coffee shop, oops!) 2. it's located at the bottom of a residential building so all the tenants & neighbors in the area are super pissed about the littering and noise 3. he's getting evicted
I can't really say I take anyone's side. I mean, the place isn't operating with the proper permit. That's a big no no. However, the sandiwch itself is good, very good but not good enough for me to stand in line and wait for 1-3 hours. Yes, that's right folks. It takes anywhere from one to three hours to get an Ike's sandwich.

  1. I hold my breath whenever I walk past homeless people.

  2. I hate using the restroom on airplanes - I am always afraid my ass is going to get sucked hahaha

  3. I don't really comb my hair in the mornings (but thank goodness I don't end up looking like Ke$ha *phew*

  4. I don't like writing in blue ink. I only use black ink pens. How OCD of me right?

  5. No matter how broke I am, I will still spend $ on food. Such a horrible habit.

  6. I don't have my multiplication table memorized.

  7. I can't even name all the states in this country.

  8. I think feet are the ugliest body part ever - yes, even my own feet. Yes, Angelina Jolie's feet too.

  9. I haven't quit coffee or even cut down like I said I would :[

  10. I'm lazy. Hella feckin lazy.

Day 13: Write a Letter Telling Someone Something You Could Never Tell Them

 Dear Dana,
There are many things I want to tell you, but I just don't have the courage. I will tell you one day, maybe when you are older. Although you are an adult now, I have always felt that I have failed you as your older sister. The day that it actually hit me was probably the worst. For all of my life, I've wrestled with guilt. I always think I'm not there for you, we don't have anything in common, I don't spend enough time with you, I don't tell you I love you, I don't do enough for you, I don't go out with you, I just always feel like it's not enough.
There was one day I had come home from school or work, and you were in a "meeting" with a psychiatrist. I guess this was necessary because you had just graduated from high school, so we needed to figure out what you would do in college. You had gone under a psychiatric evaluation and she was talking. I had no idea what was going on but I was so excited to come home and talk to you that day. You were in the computer room with her and the door was closed. I ran over and flung the door opening yelling out your name with a big smile on my face. When I saw this strange woman, I apologized non-stop. You said "Hi" to me like you always do with a smile and then introduced me as your big sister. I said "nice to meet, so sorry" and I walked out. Mom and dad were in the kitchen watching tv and I asked them what was going on.
I wasn't supposed to do this, but I did. I read your psychiatric evaluation. Mom and dad had just tossed it to the side. Since they weren't read it... I felt like I had every right to. The things she said hurt so bad. When we were growing up, I always understood that you are mentally disabled. I have always loved you for who you are and will never stop doing so. In the evaluation, she had written the results of your testings with extensive detail on your mental capacity. Those things I didn't care for. I know that you are capable of many things that are not mentioned in that review. She wrote that our family alienates you. She wrote that we ignore you. She also wrote that I only communicate with you because I feel as if it is my duty.
The thing that a lot of people don't know about is our bond. Did you know that when you were younger, you had a stuttering problem? I didn't even know until I was in middle school and learned what stuttering was. I had always understood you perfectly when we were younger. I didn't understand why others couldn't understand you, but I grew up translating for you. In many ways, I feel that the bond between us was always meant to be. There are reasons why everyone is who they are. I was put here to protect you, to love you, to help you. I have no idea where that woman got all her answers from, but I am sorry. I'm sorry our family has failed you. I'm sorry for all the hurt and anxiety you hold inside. I'm sorry I don't know how to help you.
Do you remember when 9/11 happened? While everyone was running out of our high school, I was the only person running back inside. My only thought was to find you, bring you somewhere safe, to find Ivan, then protect the both of you. Do you remember the panic you and I felt when we couldn't find Ivan? Do you remember running to grandma & grandpa's house ringing their door nonstop only to remember that they weren't home? We had to ride the bus to go home. The bus was completely empty and so were the streets. You and I called mom and begged her to leave her office downtown and to head home. If San Francisco really did come under attack that day, I was already ready to fight to my own death to protect you. Do you remember..that day we went rafting in China? You and I took a raft together because you wanted to be with me. We hit a turbulent part of the river and I fell out of the raft. You stood up screaming my name and yelling out in English to people on shore to help me, that i'm your sister and begging for someone to help me. Although no one understood you, they could see & hear the fear and panic in your face and voice. I don't think I ever swam harder or faster in my whole life. When I got back on our raft, I hugged you and I told you I was okay. You calmed down eventually, but in my head I promised myself to never worry you like that ever again. I can't bear to put you through that. The panic that hit you that day is what I feel every time I think about moving. It will be the furthest that i've ever moved away from home, and I panic because I feel I will be too far to protect you. I also don't want you to feel as though i'm abandoning you. I will ALWAYS be your big sister. I will ALWAYS understand you. I will ALWAYS love you.

♥,
your big guilt ridden sister.

P.S. Thank you to those who have read this and commented or are going to comment. Just wanted to add this note since there seems to be a bit of confusion: both of my siblings are males. I have 2 younger brothers. Dana is my brother.

Day 12: A Picture of My Room + a Secret

took this photo about 2 minutes ago.
I don't make my bed in the mornings. I make my bed at night, right before I get into it. Strange huh?
I sleep on a queen sized bed. I have no desk, therefore my bed is my desk.
Don't mind the bear. I don't have the heart to get rid of him. I've had him since my red egg & ginger party. [brief history on what a "red egg ginger party" is: In Chinese culture (and many other Asian ones) you throw a party to celebrate the birth of a newborn. Some do this when the baby is a month old, some do it when the baby is 100 days old and in recent years people do this on the baby's 1st birthday. The point of it is to "introduce" the baby to the world and to re-introduce the new mother as well. Guests invited are supposed to bring red envelopes w/ money inside for the newborn, and the proud parents give each guest a red egg.]
As a child, I never named it. About 3 or 4 years ago,  one of nephews named him "Potato"
I was trying to teach my nephew English and tested him by pointing at random objects asking him what color everything was. When I pointed at the bear, he didn't remember how to say "brown." Instead, he kept repeating in Cantonese "see jai" which means "potato." I'd tell him that it was "brown" but at this point he was irritable. He put his hands on his hips and kept going "SEE  JAI , OKAY!?!? SEE JAI AH!" which literally translates to "Potato, okay?? POTATO!" I always also have my pajamas laying out. I've already changed out of my work clothes. I love being comfortable so I have a nice stash of huge tshirts I like to lounge around in.
In the right of this photo is my book shelf. The top is strewn with parfum and makeup. The actual shelves are full of books. The left of this photo is my nightstand + miscellaneous drawers which has my daily cosmetics & brushes on top.
My secret?
I'm actually pretty shy. I don't come off this why, but I really am.
I just tell myself "confidence - wear it like makeup" and that usually does the trick.

Day 9, 10, 11.

Day 9 - Something/Someone You're Proud Of.
I'm not going to name WHOM ;] but I am pretty sure she knows who she is. I'm proud of her for coming a little more out of her shell and bonding with more females. I know it's hard to trust people, believe me - I know.
Day 10 - A Story About A Past Relationship
Oh boy. When I started this challenge, I said i'd be as real and honest as they come. Well, here goes nothing. I had an ex-boyfriend air our dirty laundry on the internet via xanga & facebook. You know what else? When we broke up he had the nerve to tell me i'm too bitchy and he couldn't stand to be around me anymore. (Shit.. I'll show you how big of a bitch I truly am!) Funny, because he tried to come crawling back so so so many times.. It even got to the point where his friends were calling me and talking to me about him. You know what I said?
I'M NOT GOING BACK TO SOMEONE WITH A SMALL ASS DICK. THERE, I FUCKING SAID IT. YOUR HOMIE HAS A SMALL DICK. AND NO, HE DOES NOT KNOW HOW TO WORK IT.
Real classy huh? I said "fuck off" in as many nice ways as possible. I attacked the manhood (or lack thereof).
