Yesterday I went up the Sonoma Coast with Leif & Seamus again. Went to Hog Island Oyster Farm in Marshall, CA again. Picked up 2 dozen oysters for my parents: 1 dozen kumamotos and a dozen mediums. The mediums were for my mom to steam with black bean sauce (Chinese style). I am sad I didn't get to capture a photo of her oysters or even eat one. However, I am proud of myself for giving her shucking lessons. To be honest, it was my first time shucking oysters anyway and I did better than her HAHAHAHA. The dozen kumamotos were more for my dad. He is the only other person in my family that likes to eat raw foods (i.e. sashimi, oysters, etc). My friend Leif & I also picked up oysters for ourselves.. I think we had about 3 dozen kumamotos. That might just be too many for us, woops. We also bought a pound of mussels and a pound of little manila clams. Brought those home for a late dinner and I steamed them up in a white wine sauce. SO DELICIOUS! I only wish we had some crusty bread to sop up all the sauce. I am thinking of reducing the white wine sauce today and tossing pasta into it ;) We also had some kumamoto oysters, some grilled cajun corn, grilled steaks, and island style smoked salmon we picked up on our trip. I wish I took some photos while I was cooking so I could in future do a "how to" cooking type of entry. I forgot, I'm sorry. Big thank you to my faux bro Leif for de-bearding the mussels, getting the grill going and shucking oysters while I did the other food prep and cooking.
my mussels & clams steamed in white wine sauce
Oh I forgot to mention!! On the drive home we stopped in Sebastopol, CA. We saw a sign on the road that said "bbqed oysters, 1/2 mile" so we had to do it.
L - R: bbq sauce, garlic butter, mint chimichurri.
oysters @ Casino in Sebastopol, CA
The mint chimichurri was my favorite. It didn't taste too much like a chimichurri to be honest. When I hear the word "chimichurri" my first thought it is "oOoo Argentina!" but it tasted more like a regular champagne mignette with fresh mint. Still, it was quite delicious.
Day 3: A Habit I Wish I Didn't Have
Well for fuck's sake.. This could go on forever and a day. Do I only pick ONE habit or can I just ramble on and on about various ones? Here is a MAJOR one I have that I really hate. I have this habit or tendency to be too giving to people I love. You may ask how is that a bad thing? Sometimes we love people who don't deserve us. Sometimes we love people who are not worthy of our emotions, effort, tears, time, our hearts. When in a relationship, I tend give my 110%. Of course some ex-boyfriends may beg to differ but that's only their perception, there are 2 sides to every story. Giving my 110% can be a fruitless endeavor because often times, it is not reciprocated. When it isn't reciprocated, I get burned. After that, I shut off my heart. This is something I am still learning to work on. Each and every single time I tell myself not to fall too deep, remember what happened last time? Take it slow and easy... We'll see where this all goes.

3 dozen oysters, plus mussels and clams? I die...I love oysters and other shellfish isn't bad either. I'm so surprised your "brother" knows how to shuck oysters and de-beard mussels...that takes quite some skill and I have yet to attempt it myself.
ReplyDeleteMy aunt and uncle live in Sebastopol :) They live amidst redwoods, have sheep, and grow literally 50 dif types of fruits + veggies! Isn't the drive up so lovely? I <3 northern Cali!
ReplyDeleteI've never eaten at any restaurants there, and I wanna try Casino now!
Oyster hoarding huh? I love oysters, mussels and anything in the shellfish family. The mussels with white wine sounds incredibly good. There's this place in San Jose called Naglee Park Garage that serves really nice mussels in wine. It's an obscure little place near the university.
ReplyDeleteWhen I went to visit my family for 4th of July, I bought some oysters and my dad and I were shucking them. It's kind of tricky at first, but it's pretty fun when you get the hang of it.
I have the same habit as you. You wrote exactly how I feel in Day 3! I love most of the songs for Day 4. :)
ReplyDeleteI'm very jealous that you got to eat all that nummy seafood! Gah!
susynesss!! ur doggie is sooooo adorbs! and the oysters look so delicious! when i visit up north, please take me to go eat at those places! the list of songs u listed is super creative! that 30 days tag is sooo fun!!!! i look forward to reading ur answers <3
ReplyDeleteAwww you and your food adventures. ^_^
ReplyDelete@Jean - ooOoO shucking takes practice that is for sure. I did good my 1st time shucking at home but when I went over to my pal Leif's (faux bro) pad, I could not shuck for beans!! I still have yet to debeard mussels. I got the impression that it was quite tedious from Leif ahhahaha
ReplyDelete@Sophia - The 1st time I drove past Casino in Sebastopol was about 3 weeks ago. My friend Aurana and I actually thought it was a run down casino hahahaha. It's actually a bar with an outdoor patio where they grill oysters. The grilled oysters were very good! If you're visiting your aunt & uncle, make a stop there!
@Jenn- I must note Naglee Park. I will be making trips to San Jose come the end of August. My brother just got an apartment out there. We should totally hang again!
@Chau - oh babe.. we are totally alike in that habit. So so very much. It really hurts when the love you give is not reciprocated and i've been there so many times... Which is why I always tell you I completely understand how you feel. I've been there, and hate it. I will always be around for you if you need me hun.
@Giang - ahhhHh I wish Seamus was my doggie :[ he's not mine. If you come up here and you seriously want to eat at those places, we will have to make a 2-3 hour drive. Hope you're down for a mini road trip! HAHAHAHAHAH
:)
ReplyDeleteHI SEAMUS! *waves* :)
ReplyDeleteI have that habit, but it's not the first thing that comes to mind when I think of the word "habit" because it hasn't happened in a while...
ReplyDeleteI like that pic of you and Seamus. As for oysters, I used a screwdriver the first time I shucked at Tomales Bay. It's much easier to use an oyster knife, but I'd rather let the guys shuck, haha.
oh my goodness! an you say shellfish overload?!! xD ahahah I LOVE IT!! SEAFOOD!! Oysters, mussels, and clams, OH MY~!! That oyster farm sounds amazing! haha your white wine sauce steamed mussels & clams look DELICIOUS! I wish I could try your cooking!! One day soon, I hope!! If you invite me over to your LA crib :)
ReplyDeleteAww, I knew you were a loving & giving gal...just from seeing your relationships with your friends and family through your blog. You are just full of life and have a hugee heart bursting with love! It's no wonder that you put a lot of effort & all of your emotions into a relationship with a boyfriend. It definitely sucks when the love you pour out to someone is not reciprocated. I'm sorry they hurt you--UGH! >:E I heart you!<3
I like your song list! most of it is very happy!! :) lol at "emo girly shit"...it really gets the best--and the wosrt--of us females lol
